17th-Century Barn Restoration, Fober Farm

A heritage restoration of a 17th-century barn in the Forest of Bowland: traditional techniques and modern durability, for a farming family.

Restored stone barn at Fober Farm with a new slate roof and a red tractor in the farmyard

Project overview

A significant piece of local agricultural heritage, restored in partnership with the Forest of Bowland National Landscape and funded through the Farming in Protected Landscapes (FiPL) Programme. The aim was to return the 17th-century barn to its original condition for the Parker family, who have farmed the land for generations.

The process

Conservation architects and structural engineers surveyed the barn's structural integrity and historical features before a full specification and bill of quantities were drawn up and a contractor appointed. Restoration used traditional techniques throughout: original materials to match the historical architecture, repaired and reinforced structure, and restored timber beams, stone walls and lime mortar.

The outcome

The barn was restored to its former glory and now serves as a working facility for the family's cattle rearing and lambing. Sustainable methods were used throughout, and bat and swallow nest cups were added to provide extra roosting and nesting opportunities.
