The brief

Preston Grasshoppers is one of the best known rugby clubs in Lancashire, with a clubhouse that hosts match days, functions and events all year round. A fire risk assessment of the building raised several issues with the fire doors and with the compartmentation that is meant to hold back fire and smoke.

The club needed those findings dealt with properly by one contractor who could take the list from the assessment and close out every item: the doors, the gaps in the building fabric and a fire alarm that needed replacing.

Our approach

The work was delivered by Cornerstone Fitout, the group's fit-out and joinery business. We fitted all the new fire doors the assessment called for. A fire door only works if it is hung properly, so each one was fitted and adjusted by our own joiners, with frame, hinges, seals, closer and gaps all checked before we moved on.

We then dealt with the compartmentation issues, sealing the breaches in walls and ceilings so each part of the building holds back fire and smoke as it was designed to. Finally we installed a full new fire alarm system.

The result

The club now has new fire doors, sound compartments and a new alarm it can rely on, with every action from the fire risk assessment closed out by one contractor and one point of contact. Our guide to fire safety compliance explains what an assessment usually finds and how to put it right.

Three things we put right

Fire doors

Worn, damaged or poorly fitting fire doors are among the most common findings in a fire risk assessment. We supplied and fitted new ones and made sure each closes and seals as it should.

Compartmentation

Holes and gaps around pipes, cables and ceilings let fire and smoke spread between rooms. We found them and sealed them so each compartment does its job.

Fire alarm

An old or faulty alarm cannot be relied on. Where a repair is not enough, we install a full new fire alarm system, as we did here.
