Leeds Corn Exchange

Making the famous domed glass roof of Leeds Corn Exchange watertight, using rope access and specialist coatings.

The problem

The domed glass roof of the Grade I listed Leeds Corn Exchange was letting in water. There was very little room around the building for scaffolding, so reaching every part of the glazing safely was a real challenge.

The solution

We brought in a rope access team to work alongside our roofers and a specialist scaffold. Every glazing bar was treated with a reinforced coating and the whole glazed area was sealed with a clear coating for a seamless, watertight finish, with senior technical supervisors from our team and TOR Coatings on site throughout.

The result

The job took six weeks and came with a 10-year watertight guarantee. The project went on to win a 2014 National Federation of Roofing Contractors award, judged on difficulty, health and safety and environmental standards.
